Project management is important because it guarantees that projects are finished on time, within budget, and to the necessary quality standards. In the fast-paced and constantly-evolving world of digital marketing, effective project management also allows teams to coordinate their efforts and work together towards one goal. With tools such as Asana and monday.com, project management has become better in practicability.
Project management makes use of two popular approaches which are known as the waterfall approach and agile approach. The waterfall approach is a traditional approach whereby projects are divided into sequential phases such as planning, designing, testing, and implementation. It is characterized by its rigidity in that one phase of a project must be completed prior to moving to another.
Contrarily, the agile approach is more flexible and iterative as it emphasizes adaptability and rectification. Projects are broken down into handy chunks and progress is reviewed at regular intervals.
Differences between Agile and Waterfall project management approach
Agile approach
Makes use of continuous testing and optimization
Frequent iterations with quick turnaround times
Collaboration between cross-functional teams is practiced
Ad Hoc adjustment to strategies
Use of data analytics to make data-driven decisions in real-time
In a project, teams are able to collaborate to make quick changes to the campaign based on customer feedback, adjust budgets, and test new strategies to improve the campaign's performance.
Waterfall approach
Comprehensive planning and documentation before execution
Timelines and budgets are fixed
Clear division of roles and responsibilities
Limited feedback and revision is applied after completion
Quality control is performed at the end of each phase
This means that within a project, teams may conduct market research, create a detailed campaign plan, design and produce all creative assets, and launch the campaign. Approving each phase as it is being completed, and only applying to future campaigns based on the results of the current one.
Agile project management approach in digital marketing
Agile project management is gaining popularity in digital marketing due to its adaptability to rapidly changing market conditions. It emphasizes collaboration, iteration, and continuous improvement throughout the project lifecycle.
For instance, when launching a new website, a digital marketing team could break down the project into smaller tasks and prioritize them based on importance. Each task would be assigned to a specific team member with a specified time frame for completion. After each iteration, the team would review their progress, make necessary adjustments, and continue working until the project is completed.
Similarly, in social media management, the team could use Agile sprints to plan and execute campaigns. The team would set specific goals for each sprint, create and publish content, monitor performance, and make adjustments as needed.
Waterfall project management approach in digital marketing
In digital marketing the planning and execution of projects such as website development, would see the high use of the Waterfall approach. Adopting this approach for such a project in particular ensures that the project is completed on time and within budget, with clearly defined goals and milestones.
Within a social media marketing campaign for instance would involve several phases such as research, planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting. The research phase would involve identifying the target audience, selecting the social media platforms to use, and determining the content to be posted. The planning phase would involve developing a content calendar, creating social media posts, and scheduling posts. The execution phase would involve posting the content on the selected social media platforms at the scheduled times. The monitoring phase would involve tracking the campaign's performance using social media analytics tools. Ideally, the project requirements are well-defined, and changes are minimal therefore waterfall would be appropriate.
Recommendations on the approach to use for different types of digital marketing projects
Choosing the right project management approach between the Agile and Waterfall for digital marketing projects can depend on various factors such as the project scope, complexity, timeline, team size, and client requirements.
It is recommended that Website Development projects, Branding and Identity Development Projects, and Marketing Automation Implementation Projects be carried out under the Waterfall methodology. Social Media Campaigns, Paid ad campaigns and content creation, which are more inclined to digital marketing, are better suited within Agile approaches as they are very flexible inherently.
It should be kept in mind however, that both approaches have their pros and cons, therefore fusing both methodologies may be the better option. Some digital marketing teams implement this strategy, and consequently, success is usually achieved greatly.
